What is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is caused when a high concentration of uric acid builds up in the body which typically forms in joints. The uric acid crystal deposits are sharp and cause crippling pain and commonly immobilizes people with this disease because it typically forms in a big toe. Deposits of uric acid, called tophi, that look like lumps under the skin which not only contribute to the swollen appearance but the affected area is definitely noticeable due to bright red discoloration of the skin’s surface.
